the princess and the puppy

Fiona is living up to her original name - Princess Fiona. She is getting very communicative to me, letting me know exactly how best to supply her needs. For example, if i don't notice her at the back door, and she wants a drink of water (as opposed to the snow most dogs eat) she runs around to the front door and causes a ruckus there.

Or, this evening, she was hungry. So she came up on the porch and asked for food, which i gave her. but then, she communicated that she preferred to dine al fresco this evening. She touched her food dish with her nose as if to say, "this smells good!" but then she turned around and touched the door with her nose. so i opened the door to let her out, at which point she turned around again, touched the food and headed out the door. I mean, Come On Beck, how slow can you be? pick up the feckin' food dish and move those feet! I tell you: dogs are not as stupid as we like to think. they have got us licked. (haha... no pun intended!)

sorry no pics of puppies. it's really cold and i don't want to expose them. but their eyes should open in another two weeks or so. then the real fun begins!

it is really beautiful now. this is coming up on the best time of the year - outdoor activity-wise. the daylight is increasing every day (6.25 hours today!) and it is either cold, clear and beautiful, or substantially warmer, snowy and windy. The northern lights still visit regularly, and the moon is getting close to full, which makes the night sky (afternoon sky) enchanting. I wish you guys could see it. This stuff is hard to photograph.

school life is less charming at the moment. i got angry in the bottom of my tummy this afternoon while the 10s were writing. they didn't come to class for two weeks, didn't study, didn't come for extra help, and now (tada!) they don't know how to do it! it's hard to watch them fail, but i can't re-teach them again during the exam! they have got to take some responsibility.

i absolve myself in the name of the ruler, the protractor and the calculator, amen.

your description brings it all back... but it makes me want to revisit nunavut. i miss that cold air... when it's -20 but you can still run around outside without a hat because it's a dry cold. i miss the stillness, the northern lights, the vastness, the broken english, the crazy expressions, the laughter over something idiotic... if this is your last year... girl, you better relish it. sure it stays in your heart... but it's not the same. ok... no... you better come home after this year. there are not even a few good men in nunavut. there are none, zippo, el nada. hey maybe when we're old- we can go up there together. i mean crochety old.

mel, it's so ironic that you would write that today, the day that i am the most homesick i have been yet this year. i know you're right - i missed the north a lot when i was down last year. what i won't miss is the stupidity and the tragedy and the stupidity.

and i agree on the man-count. we're at zero and holding. we're almost slipping into the negative integers.

and for the crone-days, you got a date, missy! ;)
