wait! don't erase me

this is the right boat - my boat.

Oleepa and her little puppy whose name I can't pronounce or remember. top right corner.

so i am recovering from my disappointment at losing my weekend alone. i would have really enjoyed it, it would have restored my spirit or whatever. but the north is all about improvising and scraping by and sometimes plain old doing without.

this afternoon i took the pups for a nice long walk on the hill behind my house. there are two hills, a huge one i've never reached the top of and a smaller one that's about half the height of the larger. we went to the top of the smaller one, then came halfway down and walked along the hill to the end of the runway. it's a decent walk. although, since your vantage point of the town doesn't change a great deal, you don't feel like you're going far. we have a consistent snow cover now, only a couple of inches, but it isn't melting. i think it's here to stay now. i don't mind - i prefer snow and cold to no-snow and cold. the light coming in the windows changes where there is snow on the ground, and i like that special snow-light.

i spent some time this afternoon hanging out with Oleepa, the little girl who lives in the next house down the hill from me. she doesn't speak any english, and i don't really know much of the local language, but we enjoy each other's company. today we played with the dogs and stacked up some wood lying around. she looooves Fiona. she calls her Piona. it's cute.

So do you have your container worth of stuff now? Or will it be a couple of days' unloading before you have all the food and home-goodies? This is just in time for Thanksgiving!

Oleepa is a cutie.

I worked all day Saturday, with H (who was an hour late because he overslept, so then he showed up unshowered and wearing flip-flops, because he "didn't have time to find his socks"). H is very, very young. My goodness. Nice guy, but wow. Sometimes he just doesn't eat, he tells me. He kept trying to tell me (in an authoritative, slightly patronizing tone) about Monty Python, or music from when I was in high school that he has just heard of, etc. He didn't know (despite me having told him before) that I taught at Queen's. He thought that I was 23 or 24, and that Patrick was 28 or 29. Sigh.

Today we watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. So good. Tomorrow, we will cook some Thanksgivingish foods and try to rent Slap-Shot, in the continuing Canadification process. PRO-cess.

oh H. you poor, subtley sexist, not so subtley dumb, little man. what you have described perfectly sums up what i perceived when i was working with him. drove me fucking crazy.

rather like wingman. grr.

i am so pleased that you are continuing your Canadification process in my absence. i would like to mention that I used the pronunciation "PRAW-cess" yesterday and while no one mentioned it, the word did sort of hang there in the air, awkwardly. haha.
