razzle dazzle

is it magpies that collect shiny things and take them back to their nests? i think it is. i think i'm kind of a magpie... not about things, but i am definitely attracted to the snap and sparkle and life-y-ness in things.

did you know that i have teaching permits from three juridstictions? i am trying to collect all thirteen. ha ha just joking.

remember that "Our Deepest Fear" quotation that was used in the movie Coach Carter? I like it. it's powerful, it clicks or resonates or something. It doesn't make any sense, but I still like it. i would like to print it out on ratty pieces of paper and leave them lying around school to be discovered by accident.

i think in small places, or places where the inhabitants feel the limits of their surroundings, smart people dumb themselves down so that they can belong. a lot of potential not being used to its full potential. i don't want to say wasted, because who am i to judge a situation so different from the one i grew up in. instead i say that some people aren't lifting their heads because the others around them are shorter. but here's something real (and short people will agree, i think):

short people may feel short, but they don't notice size as much you'd think they do. they are used to it. they spot the slouchers, no matter how tall he or she might be. tall people who slouch end up looking apologetic for when their genes did. it's awkward-looking physically, but bright, articulate people who don't keep their minds sharp end with slouchy, sloppy minds. and that is a waste.

me, i like to stand with tall people, because then i stand straighter. i'd like to think i am learning to stand straight with my short friends, too. and i like shiny things. and my deepest fear is... well, maybe you don't need to know that.

this summer i found out that i'm an inch shorter than i thought i was. it was the most bizarre experience of my life. i felt like my spine was compressing.

oooh! that sounds like fun! remember the last time we tried to get anne drunk? this time she won't have the excuse, "it's my wedding reception," to hide behind.

how could you have mistaken your own height for that long? i'm 5'6+3/4" but i always round it up to 5'7".

Hey, my ears are burning!

The Winter Wallop at the Brewing Co is my downfall. Seriously.

We will be out of town when you first get in, but I think we'll be back Monday. Then, party.
