muktuk

so we're going to the arctic circle on friday. i am excited, but also sort of bleh about it.

i mean... it's the arctic circle!! but then... it's a two hour skidoo ride in a qamutik (the sled) over really bumpy ice in freezing temperatures to go stand beside a sign that says "Arctic Circle". and i'll have to pee behind a boulder and pack out my toilet paper.

it's one of those things where you know that you're only doing something for the title. it's not like the land is so different between here and there. and taking a trip somewhere else here would be a lot more fun - i could take my dogs, bury my t.p. and ride on the skidoo instead of in a qamutik. (the circle marker nearest here is in the Park, and there are very stringent rules on qallunaat in the Park, including we have to be in a qamutik, not on a skidoo, in the Park).

i'm trying not to get my panties in a bunch over blatant racism.

in any case, of course i will go, of course i will get my pic done at the marker, and of course it will be a great day. i'm just bitchy because my stomach hurts.

ps did you know that muktuk (beluga whale meat) has more vitamin C, gram for gram, than a lemon?

no, you missed the point! i don't GET to bury it. burying it would be fine. burying it is what I would expect to do, peeing on the tundra.

I have to PACK IT OUT. I gotta put my used t.p. in a little baggie, put it in my backpack, and throw it in the garbage when i get back to town.

i hated muktuk. kent loved it. i can't believe it has so much vitamin c in it. awesome. and here you think inuit miss out on citrus.
i hate riding in kamatiks. they are not comfy. two kids fell asleep riding in one with me once. as if? fall asleep with all that bumping?
