intention

I really like when a school custodian is a part of the school team. I really like when they are involved with school discipline and when all the students and revere them. I just saw a kid go by with the mop bucket - it seems he made an inappropriate mess, and his consequences are to clean it up (with the help of the school custodian). So now he spends some one-on-one time with a good role model, learning to perform a skill properly. He will now know how to handle the wheeled mop-bucket, and he will have another adult to whom he can turn if he needs one. If the custodian was a grump who only did his "job", this place would be poorer.

It reminds me of Wayne-O, the custodian of my elementary school. All the kids loved him. He would have been Teacher of the Year every year if he'd been a teacher. Except that what everyone loved was that he wasn't a teacher at all. But just the merest suggestion that you do something would be enough - no one would think of disrespecting him. He was simply the coolest.

when i was in junior high, i liked chewing gum. this was against the rules. however, as i was generally a pretty straight-laced kid, for some reason i decided to disregard this rule. it was my mini-rebellion. my version of "damn the man." no matter how often my teacher would have me spit my gum out, i'd put another stick in. no matter how many lunch hours i'd have to stay in for detention, i'd keep on chewing. you see, i didn't mind detention. i liked reading. and i liked gum.

then one day my teacher came up with a solution. in a furry he announced "rochelle, if i find you chewing gum one more time, you are going to have to help the janitor everyday after school for two weeks." well, i kept chewing and those two weeks were some of the greatest days. hanging around chatting, sweeping, dusting. i learned to respect this lady who in other schools might be forgotten. i learned that adults could be cool. i even continued hanging around after my punishment was over. so my teacher finally gave up. and i kept on chewing gum. i pride myself a little in the fact that the unspoken gum rule changed after that two weeks from "no gum at school" to "no gum at school unless you're rochelle knox."
