pronounced "KICK-heerk-tack" (sorta) meaning: islands
we went to Kekerton today. it's the site of two old whaling stations (American and Scottish) from the nineteenth century. there were some really cool artifacts, including an enormous skull bone from a bowhead whale. current environmental regulations give Nunavut the right to hunt one bowhead every two years. i took a hundred pics today, and i will be uploading them to my flickr account tomorrow, and then i will post a link to the pics.
i'm having some technical problems uploading pictures at present, and so it is easier for me to just put them one place and link to it than to try to upload both here and flickr.
we didn't see any wildlife this year... last year if you recall we came within 5m of two bowhead whales, which was incredible and beautiful. however, this year we had beautiful weather, at least in the morning.
i was exhausted and had a deep chill from the boat ride when i got home this afternoon. i was on my way to the shower to get warmed up when i got distracted by my bed and fell asleep. when i woke up two hours late, still in my long johns and wearing my contacts, i discovered that my new roommate had baked me brownies with chocolate ice cream while i'd been sleeping! what a sweetheart, eh?
i have some great pictures coming to you soon of me hamming it up in my orange survival suit. it was a good day.
ps i got to drive a four-wheeler today! and i think i might be allowed to drive it again someday! wooo-hoooo! i miss those things.. wish i could afford to buy one.
