grapes and raisins

an action shot of my new hair. i'm serving hot dogs at the welcome-back picnic friday. photo courtesy of my new roomie.

i can't believe i've only been back a week. only just. tomorrow is the first real day of classes, and i'm actually ready for them. i've got a pile of junk set up in the middle of the art room, with the tables around it in a horseshoe. the kids will sit on the inside of the horseshoe so that they can have an un-obstructed view of the crap-pile, and yet have their paper out of their line of sight, because...

we are starting with blind contour drawings! ya, baby!

i need to go to bed. i miss you all - send me a frickin' email already! :)

Hey there....
your hair looks like you had it when we were in first year. hilarious. that was my first thought.

I am curious to hear about your last week in the south...

happy to hear that are safe and well. and that you were ready for classes. how did the first day go?
My first day of class is tomorrow... we start at 6:45. so very early.

miss you..really!

Your hair is great - very X-Men.

Blind contour drawings! Hooray!

I have to go make a logic handout for my class, and write up a lecture on an essay of George Orwell's. They don't know who he is, and they never had to read 1984 in school. This is why US people are so pliable and willing to put up with intrusive surveillance and double-speak. Sigh.

tsk tsk melissa. in first year my hair was halfway down my back and not white-and-brown. :P i don't think i actually started getting it cut until much later.

yay for x-men! i can't believe you students haven't heard of george orwell. we didn't read 1984 in our class, but we did read animal farm, and it was very clearly understood that 1984 was one of those books everyone was supposed to read. he was a final jeopardy question the other night - who said in 1949 '[the image of humanity is a boot stamping on a human face - forever]' i had to paraphrase.

hmmm.. now i want to read dystopic literature. i wonder if i have any...

Yeh, so my big lecture went awry. I wanted to prepare an example of reconstructing someone's argument and then critiquing it. I chose an article about this Senator who was just caught soliciting gay sex in a public bathroom; the article says basically "this just goes to show why we shouldn't have gays in the military". So I spent a few hours carefully preparing a reconstruction and critique of this.

But my students were totally freaked out by the gay bathroom sex thing. One walked out in disgust. Sigh. Not my best moment.

oh, that's so sucky. you must be in the most backward place ever!! i'm sorry your hard work was wasted... still, maybe it cracked something into one of the heads that didn't get up and leave.

some wise lady said that people who are easily offended should be offended more often.
