this afternoon we had a student council meeting. i think i'm going to try to introduce some democratic process into the meetings so that they actually learn something about how government works. it'll be tricky. i'll be reading a chapter ahead.
in other news, after about a week of relentless cracking-down on the grade 11s for their shitty attitude and behaviour, i'm seeing periodic results. today's double class went well, with students listening and working. one could even use the word "assiduous" in application to their work.
in other news, i cannot wait to leave for christmas. i ate too much for supper. i'm getting used to the GD beeping of my alarm clock. i respect my clock for beginning at a low pitch and volume and getting progressively louder and higher-pitched the longer you let it beep. however, i also ordered a new iPod last night.
i'm definitely feeling the cold and dark. to give you an idea of stuff, i generally leave for work shortly after 8 am. and i walk in near-darkness. the streetlights are definitely on. they do go out (except on cloudy days) at solar noon (11 am) but are back on by the time we walk home at lunch time (12 pm). and then when we walk back after lunch, it's getting dark again. this is quarter to one that it's getting dark. finally, when i glance out the window at the break between fifth and sixth periods, it's pitch black.
remember how weird and creepy it felt as a kid to be at school at night for concerts or whatever, because there was weird clingy darkness about everything? that's every day here. bizarre.

i heard today on the cbc that according the the farmer's almanac that the sun will not set any later than it did today. from now on, it will continue to set a minute later. obviously the days will continue to get shorter until the 22, but that's do to the sun rising later, not setting earlier. i don't know if you find that as interesting as i did, but i thought i'd pass it along anyway :)
here the latest sunrise comes on the 20, the shortest day is the 22 and the latest sunrise is the 21. but we're talking about differences of 25 or 50 seconds from one day to the next. effectively, it's just dark.
I'm almost done too... Grading final papers this weekend, then exam Tuesday, grades due Thursday, then sweet sweet freedom.
Most recent paper I read is by a kid on the baseball team, arguing that college athletes should be able to bet on their own games, because it's more fun and "who's it hurting anyway?". And how it's "unfortunate" that players were banned from baseball for life for throwing games, since people should get a second chance. Mmm. Unconvincing. Also maybe I'm going to have a talk with the baseball coach to have him keep an eye on this kid.
it's nice that he has an opinion. unfortunate that he's dumb though. :P hahaha
it's snowing again here.
I just read your description of light, and I am not sure that I could deal with all that lack of light.
I am looking forward to seeing you when you come down. We will have to have a drink of a warm nature while looking at my real christmas tree.
I am the anonymous one!

you know, i think i'd be ok with the number of hours of darkness, if i could just see the sun. twilight doesn't cut it.
i'm looking forward to drinks and real trees (i might just have to kiss one!) and seeing YOU!!
