time out

no pics today. actually, i took some, but i haven't transferred them to the computer yet.

i'm sitting in the art room, where i just finished trimming a couple of pots. i don't much care for earthenware clay - it's harder to work with than stoneware clay. or maybe it just seems that way because i've had to revitalize ten-year-old clay and because i learned on stoneware. but earthenware fires at a much lower temperature than the other kinds of clay, so it's safer or more economical for schools. plus, all the glazes and stuff are for earthenware, too, so... yeah.

last night we had a midnight 10K walk/run to celebrate the solstice. it was raining lightly, so there were only a few of us participating. it was a really enjoyable walk. i fell into thinking while i was walking.

the POINT IS... i can't believe the year is all over. it really is - all over but the crying. and i don't anticipate any tears (at least, on my part). except maybe tears of joy when my feet touch ground in ottawa next weekend. i find that as i am packing and tying up loose ends, the last time i left the north is flooding back on me. my other northern experience was so intense - exciting, hilarious, wonderful, shocking, and truly terrible. this experience has been less.... everything. seriously: no one was killed, no one was even seriously injured. there was no real harassment, no threats of violence. the people i lost were lost to better jobs or were worn down by an unfair system. there were not even any unbelievable questions from students. the over-riding theme of the year was niggling annoyances. i wonder if i have become accustomed to such a high level of drama in my life that a lack of drama makes me wonder what i'm missing. i suppose this has been a year full of that time that comes between the big defining moments of my life.
it's been a long december
and there's reason to believe
maybe this year will be better than the last

ooh, i've totally felt like that before when adjusting to a life without drama. i've found tho that one can become accustomed to a life without it, and actually really enjoy it's absence.

I feel that I am on the opposite end of the spectrum.... no drama in my life. I have to adjust to life when there is drama.
when there is no drama... life still teaches you lessons!

i believe that life can exist in a sort of calm happiness, but i have never really experienced that. i think it might be a nice to have a drama-free period extend long enough that i could actually get used to it. right now i still get antsy when things get quiet - my mind makes up for the quiet.
