solstice

spring has arrived in the north, just in time for the summer solstice.

after six months as a solid sheet of ice, the fjord is open again. it happened very suddenly, taking even the locals off guard. five parked skidoos went through the ice around 4 in the morning yesterday. a few were able to be fished out, with chains attached and pulled onto shore with a front-end loader. it was interested to see a skidoo being escorted home on the prongs of a forklift, with seaweed dangling off its skis. too bad i didn't have my camera with me.

"the longest day" is a lot less meaningful when it never gets dark anymore.

this has been a time of considerable inner peace despite turmoil in my environment and even in the details of my life. i am strangely insulated against myself.

i am anxious for the sound of warm breezes in the trees and the whine of those summer bugs (cicadas? do we have those in canada?). chainsaws and water lapping at the shore. bad country music from a neighbour's radio. torrential rain and thunderstorms!! the smell of charred meat from the barbecue, fresh fruit.... mmmm.... i am waiting for summer, and it probably looks patient from the outside, but it isn't. i am waiting for summer like i wait for the bathroom when i really have to go!
